Rue/Sabien performance is an ad lib, rapid-fire affair, riddled with a melodic cascade of personally-penned favorites peppered with musical ideas (occasionally interrupted by an errant thought: they sometimes feel the need to explain the process), duologues on inspiration (and what does not inspire), oblique social commentary, and comic highs and lows (when good things happen to bad people), all thoroughly plumbed from the musical depths of piano, guitar, violin, mando and voices that soar, growl and bubble within a sardonic Robin Williams/Noel Coward sense of humor. Influenced by nearly anything and everything musical. Buckle up!~Charles Bunbury

Gary Rue (guitar, piano and voice): Composer, lyricist, performer, songs recorded by Helen Reddy, Nick Lowe, Prudence Johnson. 2010 MN Music Hall of Fame inductee.

Randy Sabien (guitar, violin, mando, piano, and voice)

GERSHWIN! Prudence Johnson & Dan Chouinard with violinist Randy Sabien
No other composer captured the spirit and energy of 20th-century America better
than George Gershwin. In his tragically short lifetime, he gave us masterpieces like
Rhapsody in Blue, An American in Paris, Porgy and Bess and beloved songs—
“Summertime,” “Lady Be Good,” “Someone to Watch Over Me”--that have become part of the fabric of our culture. Gershwin’s music is in good hands with pianist Dan Chouinard, violinist Randy Sabien and vocalist Prudence Johnson, who bring gentle virtuosity and playful invention to the stage. Toes can’t help tapping when Randy
starts swinging, hearts melt when Prudence wraps her velvet voice around a
Gershwin love song, and Dan’s version of Rhapsody in Blue is an absolute show
    stopper!

“(Johnson’s) lush, precise, expressive voice, with its pearls of vibrato, is best
unadorned. A smart, sensitive pianist – like Chouinard, an in-demand
accompanist – is all she needs.” Pamela Espeland, MinnPost

Laurel Canyon is a neighborhood in the Hollywood Hills region of the Santa Monica Mountains. The creative flowering that grew out of this section of Los Angeles in the 1960s and early 1970s produced some of the greatest music of that era, changing the culture and the lives of some of rock and roll’s most gifted artists. Imagine living down the road from Joni Mitchel or just upstairs from Jackson Browne. Imagine if all you had to do on a weekend night was walk down the street and you were at someone’s house and they had a guitar and a piano … and their name was Neil Young, or Graham Nash, or Glen Frey. Imagine if your neighbors were musicians who were starting bands called The Doors, The Byrds, Crosby Stills and Nash, The Monkees, The Eagles, and The Mamas and Papas.

Veteran singers Mary Jane Alm, Boyd Lee, Aimée Lee, Paul Frantzich and Tim Frantzich, along with a stellar lineup of musicians will walk you through the streets of this magical place and time. You will hear the stories of some of your favorite musicians. Your memory will be flooded with songs from The Association, The Turtles, Linda Ronstadt, Carole King, James Taylor, Buffalo Springfield, Brian Wilson, The Jefferson Airplane, and more … all who resided in this beautiful bubble of creativity, friendship, sunshine, and music.

This show brings together what happened in this magical place when it was just the right time, just the right space, with just the right musicians … in a very special moment in time that created the songs of Laurel Canyon.
